![]() We're left with a pretty open ending - would you ever revisit these characters for more books? It's funny I don't really feel that it's an open ending it's just that it doesn't end in a conventional way, in something that became conventional only recently. How do you think Lena changes in Requiem? We see a different side of her, don't we? Yeah Lena has changed so substantially, I think that basically, how she changes in Requiem is that she goes from being purely kind of reactive, Delirium is kind of the story of discovery, Pandemonium the story of reactivity and in Requiem I feel like she finally develops a kind of urgency towards the end, over her own life, about making her own choices as complex as they are and she really becomes kind of an adult in this book. Lena's story is full of outward external evidence of violence and yet there's a kind of smouldering violence under Hana's storyline, too. It also allowed us to have a window into Portland, to see characters that I think are really important and were important to Lena but that we haven't seen in so long, so it's a really nice counter point, there's this weird domesticity to Hannah's point of view and it's really enclosed whereas Lena is all over the place. What made you decide to write from Hana's point of view for Requiem? Partly the two things I've said already - I mean, I felt the series is so centred on, the sure is a critically part of the book and avoiding the cure, wanting the cure, not wanting the cure and fighting against it and I realised we never really had, we've only ever seen that from an external point of view and we've never seen what it was like to actually be cured and what that kind of propaganda looked like from the inside. And you know they can expect to see all the people like Lena's mother come together. ![]() ![]() What should people expect from Requiem? One thing that they can expect from Requiem: we've never had an inside view of what it is like to be cured, there are two different points of view, Hannah and Lena are both giving their own separate storylines and as a result we really get to see two contrasting lives, so I think that's exciting and I also think having Hana there also allows us to access some of the characters we haven't seen since Delirium, like Grace, so that's exciting for people.
